Learning Flash!

As the title would imply, I am learning Flash in Interactive Design!
We made some boxes move today.. Haha. Doesn't sound very interesting but I found it quite fun, and hope to improve my flash skills.

Will post the flash animation when it's done for sure!!

Digital Eskimo!

Quite possibly appearing like a fangirl here, but I really like Digital Eskimo.

Their existence was brought to my attention last semester when I was researching a design studio. Their approach to design is unique (plus they have an awesome website) and admirable.

Definitely worth checking out.

About This Blog

This blog was created for the unit Interactive Design (2008).

Here will be held some information on topics regarding Interactive Design, as the unit progresses throughout this semester.

Ideally, this blog will be updated twice a week.

About Me

My name is Lauren Chew, my online name is Raine.

I'm a second year student at the University Of Western Sydney (UWS), studying a Bachelor Of Design in Visual Communication. It's a bit of a mouthful so we generally call ourselves VisComm. I graduated from High School in 2006.

I chose this course because it interested me, I've always enjoyed arts and designing (whether I'm any good at the two is debatable..) and hopefully this course will aid me in getting a job in the design industry when I'm done.

Interactive Design was an elective, I believe the other choices were Animation and Photography. I may have forgotten one, but that's irrelevant. I chose Interactive Design because out of the many possibilities Visual Communication Design offers, I prefer screen design, websites, or just designing using the computer and/or the internet.

I've had a bit of experience designing websites for others, however I have never used Dreamweaver or any other website publishing software.. My websites at the moment are all hand coded in Simpletext, and are most probably a messy mix of HTML, PHP and CSS, as I have had no professional instruction in coding.
I own a domain, which I use as a commissions site, blog, and somewhere just to recreationally design for personal projects.

Web 2.0

Definition:

Web 2.0, a relatively new term used to define what is fast becoming the new World Wide Web (WWW) of today.

Web 2.0 is not a new type of WWW, speaking from a technical point of view, nothing tech or spec related has changed from Web 1.0, but 2.0 is used to define the new ways in which the web is being used.
This new way, fast becoming increasingly popular, mostly differs from Web 1.0 by the level of interactivity online. For example, the users are able to more directly influence, change, edit information online. Be this in the form of a weblog (blog), image sharing, forums etc.

Web 2.0 isn't only for personal use, the professional possibilities for such interactivity are also highly beneficial. Software such as Skype for example, allows users to speak with others anywhere in the world, and even host conference calls in the same way.

Examples:

Blogger - WebLogs for users, very easy to use and maintain.
Wikipedia - Information sharing on a worldwide level, entered and edited completely by users.
Flickr - Image sharing, simple to use and to share to anyone online.

Interactive Design

Definition:

Interactive Design is a type of design which focuses heavily on the end user and their interaction with the given product or project.
When designing interactively, certain considerations must be made by the designer in order to create a successful end result.
A logical way to do this is for the designer to consider the user's persona, that is, the type of person who will be using or making the most of this result. Once the persona is defined and their likes and uses for the product identified, a successful design is more likely to be created.

Examples:

Mobile Phones, MP3/portable music devices.

Information/Instructional Design

Definition:

Information/Instructional Design is the way in which a large amount of information is presented to be clear and easy to understand and read.
An easier way to look at this is to use "LATCH", an acronym for ways vast amounts of information may be presented in a clearer view:
L ocation
A lphabet
T ime
C ategory
H ierarchy

Examples:

A dictionary (alphabet), Google Maps (location).
